Raphael’s Home
Raphael lived in a small fifteenth century home with his family in Urbino. His father was a respected painter in the area. From a very young age Raphael learned all the skills required to be an artist. His artistic life began as he created grinding colors for his father, Giovanni Santi, who painted for Duke Federigo da Montefeltro. Giovanni was influential enough that he was able to introduce his son, Raphael, to the court of the Duke of Urbino.
Visitors are introduced to the artist’s lifestyle. Wander from room to room to see how Raphael and his parents lived. Tour through the small rooms to view everyday life of the family. You will see the kitchen, the furnace used to keep the home warm, artistic tools of the trade, and sleeping areas. The home is a maze of these everyday rooms, but outside, there is a small courtyard which allowed the family to escape the streets and have a quiet area.
Off to one side, is a replica of how the paints were created for you to see. The grinding stone used to make the colors is quite massive!
