Duomo Di Siena
This basilica was built not only to rival but surpass El Duomo in Florence. But, history threw a kink into the plans of men. The black plague had swept through Europe and the construction of this monument came to a sudden halt.
Today, walk up the twisty streets to find this basilica on the hill top with its spires reaching high above all the other buildings. The whole Basilica reaches high toward the heavens! The basilica contains a beautiful black and white marble design. Outside, builders were beginning to create the baptism structure, but never completed it.
Walking around the side of the Basilica, come face to face to the front doors, and a statue of Rome’s she-wolf and the suckling twins, Romulus and Remus.
Once through the doors, the interior of the Basilica is a masterpiece; marble, marble, and more marble!! Everywhere are intricate designed mosaic floors, fresco paintings, and sculptures. Those who designed the structure were committed to making a lasting impression for those who visited. Looking to the top of the ceiling, you find small carved heads of the Popes beginning with Peter to Pope Clement VI looking down at you. As you walk through the Basilica be sure to look down and appreciate the intricate battle scenes depicted on the floor.
One of the side sections has a small entry way, step in and be transported back in time to Piccolomini’s Library. Not only was a library rare in the middle ages, but as an additional treat you will view beautiful fresco paintings that adorn the high walls and ceiling; bright and beautiful as if they were completed yesterday. From stunning frescos above to bright crescent moons on the floor, you will find yourself in awe of the vibrant colors from centuries ago!
Entry into this Basilica is between 8 and 15 Euro depending on when you are traveling. For further details on prices, visit the web page HERE.
