Gythion (Gythio)
This quite port town isn’t a tourist hot spot, so don’t expect it to be. However, this city is one that truly embodies what every day Greek life is. People here are friendly and the sea food is excellent! This small city use to be the ancient sea port for the legendary city-state Sparta. Imagine while eating a freshly caught fish along the shore line, thousands of soldiers, and sailors in port getting ready to set sail for their new conquest; quite the site!! This same port is a great access point to arrange trips to the ancient sites of Sparta, the ruins of the Byzantine Mystras, and the Diros Caves.
If staying in town, wander through the quiet cobble streets. There is a small plaza area, surrounded by shops. Enjoy looking around, or even grab a sweet treat at the local sweet store. This sleepy port town becomes busier when cruise ships bring their passengers by. However, people can access this city by vehicle as well.
