El Duomo
The largest church in the city, El Duomo is an astonishing feat. Covered in green, white, and pink marble with the largest brick dome to boot. This cathedral began construction in 1296 but due to the large building, and setbacks the building wasn’t complete until the 19th Century. This cathedral is so massive; it is easily seen as you explore the city.
Compared to how the cathedral appears outside, it’s rather plain inside. There are some decorations, an internal working clock, and an honored piece to Dante and his masterpiece of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Finally, come to where the giant dome is above you and see the amazing fresco paintings that cover every centimeter of the wall.
Entry of El Duomo is free. However, if you would like to climb the stairs that lead to the dome, it will cost 8 Euro. This trip is a one way up, and one way down. It will take you between the two domes that Brunelleschi built, along the walls of the outside dome (where the frescos are only inches away from you) and to the top to see a panoramic view of the city. On the way back down, go back between the two dome walls, come out to see more of the frescos, and back between to see the instruments made to create the domes and paintings.
The whole city can be viewed up here!!Finally, come back out and be on solid ground once more. The climb is amazing, and you get a spectacular panoramic view of the whole city once on top. However, make sure that you are ready to climb steps.
