Molokini Crater Dive
I wanted to travel here specifically to dive in the Molokini Crater. I really wanted to dive this location because, why not dive inside a volcano caldera!! This natural wildlife preserve is full of Hawaiian reefs, fish, and spectacular visibility. Because the caldera walls keep intense waves at bay, the water isn’t mixed with a heap of sediment floating in the water; as such, it’s very easy to see 100 feet or more!
As we prepared for our dive, we talked about the myths of this special location, and how it helped shaped the local legends. We also talked about some of the animals that we may see. Just before we grabbed our gear, a whale spy hopped to check us out! It was a huge spur to get into the water right then from all of us.
Dive below, and become aww struck at the calm water and incredible ability to see so far out! The beautiful water and the hard coral below captivates. The school fish gathered in tight groups to stay protected from us and any hunters nearby.
Our dive master led the group around, and even found a small resting shark among the coral niches. By the time it was ready to turn around, we had explored an area full of spectacular views, big fish like a giant barracuda, schools, and off in the far distance one of the whales.
