Queen’s Staircase

Queen’s Staircase

On top of the last step, this sign appears.
The stairs are steep, but the view is beautiful on top.

The Queen’s Staircase was carved out of the same limestone as the forts, and was created by slaves. In one year, 66 steps were chiseled out of the surrounding rock walls; all to have a shortcut to Fort Fincastle. It is popular with the locals who will be happy to give you a history lesson.

At the top of the stairs and up a small path, there is a small store in which food, drinks, or souvenirs can be purchased. This is also the best place to chat with local folks. I found these people to be amazingly helpful and friendly.

Capture the staircase with your camera. Its beauty will be a treasured memory of your visit.
