Kinderdijk
Kinderdijk is a unique UNESCO heritage site that lies within The Netherlands. It is home to approximately 50 working windmills. Today, a couple of them serve as homes for the families that tend to these treasures. Visit the small museum with a short movie discussing how the Dutch battled the sea to make a home and farm in a country that is mostly below sea level.
Learn how these giant windmills help keep the ground dry enough to farm and provide homes for the residents. While walking among the canals filled with ducks and their ducklings you will pass rows of windmills. These brightly colored windmills framed by the blue sky and rolling white clouds create the perfect pictures for any person.
You can visit a windmill that you can enter and learn about the intricate details of its mechanics and learn about life in a windmill by viewing all of the artifacts inside. All the while outside the owner is putting on the sails. It’s amazing to see how these are quickly placed on the blades enabling the machine to capture the wind and convert it energy to run equipment needed to support the community. Watch as the blades slowly but steadily turn in the wind. This one little example demonstrates beautifully how each of these work to help keep the sea at bay and keep the country safe.
Once the demonstration is over, head back towards the museum to end your tour of the amazing UNESCO site. Kinderdijk is a very beautiful step back in time, and it presents amazing subjects for any photographer.
