Pantheon
One of the most unique Roman buildings that remains in great condition. This structure use to be a temple to the gods with statues all around. It has a 30 foot hole in the roof called an oculus that provides all the sunlight and fresh air that is needed. From the ground to the top of the structure, it stands over 140 feet tall and leaves you breathless in the magnificent architecture.
When Christianity gained strength, they took control of this temple and made it a place to worship their god. The statues of that once were inside were destroyed, and metal was stripped off. This bronze has been reshaped into the bee covered baldachin within St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Now, the Pantheon remains as a church to God, while being a burial place for several people; such as the artist Raphael.
Entry is free and photos are allowed. Depending on when you arrive, it may be empty or filled with other people exploring the site. It is really exciting to see that it can also be a way to tell time if staying long enough.
